Parents reasons for homeschooling
For a variety of reasons, the homeschool movement is growing in the United States. Homeschooling is an educational approach wherein children obtain much, most, or all of their education at home, typically with extensive parental involvement. Exact number of homeschooled children are unknown; however, estimates range from 1 to 3 percent of school-age children.
Parents homeschool their children for many reasons that are often unique to their family situation. These include religious reasons (schools teach subjects that conflict with the parent religious beliefs), school curriculum (parents believe they can provide a better academic experience for their children through homeschooling), school culture (avoiding safety cancerns, drug availability, and peer pressure), sex education and race issues, health or behavior issues, family issues (mothers may want to spend more time with the children and families may want to influence the beliefs, values, and behaviors of their children and seek to nurture these through homeschooling). So in general, here are several reasons for homeschooling:
- Concern about environment of other schools
- Dissatisfaction with academic instruction at other schools
- To provide religious or moral instruction
- Child has a physical or mental health problems
- Child has other special needs
